Chelsea have agreed to sell Tyrique George to Everton in a deal worth up to £24 million, bringing the academy graduate’s long association with the London club to an end.

Everton will pay an initial £18m with a further £6m available through add-ons after David Moyes was impressed by the winger during his six-month loan spell on Merseyside. Chelsea have also secured a 15 per cent sell-on clause as part of the agreement.

The clubs have reached a full agreement and George has accepted personal terms with Everton. The 20-year-old is now set to return permanently to the club he joined on loan during the winter transfer window.

The move gives George the chance to build on his first taste of regular Premier League football, while Chelsea receive a significant fee for another player developed through their academy.

Everton make Tyrique George loan move permanent

Everton wanted to keep George from the beginning of the summer after Moyes had the opportunity to work with him during the second half of last season.

The winger arrived on the final day of the winter transfer window and made 11 Premier League appearances. He did not register a goal or assist, but his performances were enough to convince Everton that he should remain part of their plans.

That context matters when assessing the transfer. Everton are not signing George purely on the strength of his numbers during a short loan. Moyes has already seen how he trains, how he responds to Premier League demands and where he can improve.

A permanent move should now offer the winger something that had become increasingly difficult to find at Chelsea: a clear route to consistent first-team football.

George’s opportunities at Stamford Bridge were squeezed after Chelsea invested heavily in attacking players. João Pedro, Jamie Gittens, Alejandro Garnacho and Liam Delap were among the forwards brought into the squad, increasing the competition for minutes.

Rather than returning to that crowded picture, George will continue his development in an environment he already knows.

Chelsea secure £24m package and sell-on clause

The financial structure gives Chelsea the chance to receive £24m if the agreed bonuses are triggered.

The 15 per cent sell-on clause could also become important if George develops at Everton and earns another major transfer later in his career. For Chelsea, that provides the possibility of further income beyond the initial deal.

A permanent exit had been close before.

Fulham agreed a £22m deal to sign George last summer, only for the transfer to collapse on deadline day. He remained at Chelsea before eventually moving to Everton on loan several months later.

The latest agreement means Chelsea are now in position to receive a similar guaranteed fee, with the potential for the overall package to rise higher.

For Everton, the cost reflects a longer-term investment in a 20-year-old player who already has experience in the Premier League and European competition.

George leaves Chelsea after rising through academy

George’s departure closes a 12-year chapter at Chelsea.

He joined the academy as an Under-8 in 2014 and progressed through the age groups before making his senior debut in August 2024 against Servette in a Conference League qualifier.

The winger went on to make 37 first-team appearances, scoring six goals and providing six assists.

His Chelsea career also included involvement in two trophy-winning campaigns. George played 12 times during the club’s successful Conference League run and produced three goal contributions, before appearing twice at the Club World Cup.

He also scored against Espérance de Tunis during the group stage of that tournament.

Those moments demonstrated his potential, but Chelsea’s attacking recruitment made regular minutes increasingly difficult to secure. The Everton move now gives him the opportunity to turn promising first-team experience into a more established Premier League role.

Based on the six months Everton have already spent working with George, this is not a speculative signing. Moyes has had time to assess the player before the club committed to a permanent transfer, which should reduce some of the uncertainty that normally comes with investing heavily in a young winger.

However, George will still need to improve his output. Eleven league appearances without a goal or assist show that his next step must involve becoming more decisive in the final third.

  • Chelsea have secured a 15 per cent sell-on clause.
  • George has agreed personal terms after spending six months on loan at Everton.

What’s Next?

George will now complete the remaining formalities before beginning his first full season as a permanent Everton player.

The challenge for the 20-year-old will be turning the promise that impressed Moyes into consistent end product. Everton already know the player and have committed a substantial fee to keep him, so the next stage of his development should come with greater opportunities and expectations.

Chelsea, meanwhile, will bank another significant academy sale while retaining an interest in George’s future through the 15 per cent sell-on clause.

Can Tyrique George become a regular Premier League starter under David Moyes at Everton?
