John Barnes questions real reason behind Sandro Tonali’s Tottenham move

Sandro Tonali’s imminent £100 million move to Tottenham has been questioned by former Newcastle player John Barnes, who believes lifestyle factors played a major role in the midfielder’s decision.

Tottenham are closing in on Tonali after already spending £85m on Mateus Fernandes. The Italy international has effectively confirmed his Newcastle exit, describing the transfer as a new challenge.

However, Barnes believes the attraction of London may have been more important than football.

Speaking to Betfair, Barnes argued that foreign players often prefer London when given the opportunity to move south.

“When people wonder why this move could happen, it’s nothing to do with football,” he said.

Barnes pointed out that Newcastle have been performing better than Tottenham but suggested Tonali and his family may simply prefer life in the capital.

Tonali’s own comments give some support to the idea that personal factors influenced the move.

Tonali has revealed that Roberto De Zerbi was a key reason behind his decision to choose Tottenham over other interested clubs, including Manchester City.

The midfielder also admitted his family wanted a change after the birth of their child.

“De Zerbi made a great difference and did his job very well,” Tonali said.

The move therefore appears to be based on several factors. Tottenham are making a huge financial commitment, but Tonali’s relationship with De Zerbi and his family’s desire for a different lifestyle were clearly important.

Tottenham are expected to officially announce Tonali once the remaining formalities are completed.

The midfielder will then begin a new chapter under De Zerbi, with Spurs hoping their £100m investment can transform the centre of the team.
