Marcus Rashford’s Manchester United career may not be over, with Matheus Cunha’s changing role potentially creating a new opening for the winger next season.

Rashford wanted his future resolved before the World Cup, but no transfer was agreed and Barcelona moved for Anthony Gordon instead. The 28-year-old has since put club matters aside while focusing on England.

Behind the scenes, however, his camp have held positive talks with United. The possibility of Rashford returning for pre-season and being reintegrated into Michael Carrick’s squad is now growing.

Cunha’s Brazil role could change United plans

Cunha spent much of last season on the left for United, but his World Cup performances have shown he can offer something different.

The 27-year-old has played as a striker for Brazil and scored three goals at the tournament. His ability to drop deep, link play and still provide a threat inside the box has given Carlo Ancelotti another dimension in attack.

Carrick generally preferred Benjamin Sesko or Bryan Mbeumo as his No. 9 last season, but Cunha’s form suggests he could be used centrally more often.

That could create space for Rashford on the left.

Rashford could still have a role at Old Trafford

Rashford produced 14 goals and 14 assists during his season with Barcelona, although his form was not always consistent.

United are still looking for options on the left side. Patrick Dorgu can play further forward but may also return to full-back, leaving room for another direct winger.

A front line featuring Rashford on the left and Cunha centrally could offer an interesting balance. Rashford’s runs in behind may suit a striker who likes to drop towards the ball and create space for others.

Nothing has been decided yet, but a return to United now looks more realistic than it did earlier in the summer.
