Tottenham target Cody Gakpo as Liverpool set huge transfer stance

Tottenham Hotspur have identified Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo as one of their leading transfer targets, although any move for the Netherlands international is expected to be extremely difficult.

According to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Spurs have made multiple enquiries about Gakpo's situation and have also held talks with the player's representatives as they explore attacking reinforcements for Roberto De Zerbi's squad.

Despite Tottenham's interest, Liverpool have no intention of sanctioning an easy departure.

Romano reports that Liverpool remain very satisfied with Gakpo and have no financial or sporting need to sell the Dutch forward this summer.

As a result, only an exceptional offer would persuade Liverpool to consider negotiations.

That stance makes a deal highly complicated for Tottenham, who continue to assess whether a move is financially realistic before deciding on their next steps.

At this stage, the interest is genuine but there is no agreement between the clubs.

The report adds that Tottenham view Gakpo as an ideal fit for De Zerbi's attacking system.

The Dutch international is admired for his versatility across the front line, having featured as a left winger, centre-forward and attacking midfielder during his time at Liverpool.

While Spurs continue monitoring the situation, Liverpool's position means any formal approach would likely require a substantial offer to test the club's resolve.

Gakpo featured regularly for Liverpool during the 2025/26 Premier League campaign, making 36 league appearances.

The 27-year-old scored seven goals and contributed five assists as Liverpool challenged on multiple fronts, reinforcing his importance within the squad.

With Liverpool under no pressure to cash in and Gakpo remaining a valued member of the team, Tottenham face a significant challenge if they hope to complete one of the summer's biggest transfers.

Tottenham are expected to continue monitoring Gakpo's situation while assessing whether Liverpool's valuation makes a deal achievable. Unless the Merseyside club soften their stance or receive an exceptional offer, negotiations are unlikely to advance significantly in the immediate future.
