Ruben Amorim has admitted making mistakes during his difficult Manchester United spell but insists he remains proud of managing the club.

The 41-year-old has now started a new chapter after being appointed Milan manager, having largely stayed out of the spotlight since leaving Old Trafford in January.

Speaking during his official presentation in Italy, Amorim addressed his United experience publicly and explained why he believes the setbacks have made him a better coach.

Amorim refused to go into detail about everything that went wrong at United, arguing that the wider context would need to be explained.

However, he accepted responsibility for his own decisions.

“I learned, and I learned a lot. I made mistakes, but I’m proud to have managed Manchester United,” Amorim said.

“Now, though, that’s part of the past.”

Rather than distancing himself from his time in England, the Portuguese coach described it as an important part of his development.

“There are many things I can do better today; I’ve gained experience,” he added. “I’m certain I’m a better coach today.”

Amorim had been linked with Benfica and a possible Premier League return with Fulham before choosing Milan.

Amorim explains his Milan vision

Attention has now turned to how Amorim plans to rebuild Milan following Massimiliano Allegri’s departure.

The former United boss wants his team to dominate opponents while playing attractive football, although he accepts his tactical ideas may need to be adjusted to suit the squad.

“I want the team to entertain,” Amorim said. “I want the supporters to enjoy themselves and watch attractive football.”

He also stressed the need for defensive strength and concentration, warning that even a small drop in intensity can decide matches at the highest level.

Despite taking over one of Europe’s biggest clubs, Amorim is not demanding an immediate transfer overhaul.

He plans to assess Milan’s current squad and young players during pre-season before deciding where new signings are required.
