Brentford closing in on Callum Wilson free transfer

Brentford are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign veteran Premier League striker Callum Wilson on a free transfer.

The 34-year-old is available after his one-year contract with West Ham expired at the end of last season, and talks with the Bees are said to be progressing well.

According to Sports Boom, there is growing optimism that an agreement could be reached within the next couple of weeks.

Brentford are believed to have made the strongest and most decisive approach for Wilson, who wants to continue playing in the Premier League following West Ham’s relegation.

Everton and Leeds have also been linked with the former England international, while West Ham reportedly blocked a possible departure in January.

The absence of a transfer fee makes Wilson an attractive option for Brentford. Although his age and injury record will need to be considered, his experience and proven goalscoring record could provide valuable depth.

Wilson scored 61 goals in 126 Premier League appearances for Bournemouth before joining Newcastle for £20m in 2020. He later added another 47 league goals in 113 appearances for the Magpies.

Across his senior career, the striker has scored 148 goals in 427 matches and also registered two goals in nine appearances for England.

Brentford would not be signing Wilson as a long-term solution or expecting him to start every match.

Instead, he could provide an experienced alternative capable of leading the attack, coming off the bench and converting chances in tight Premier League matches.

His knowledge of the division would also reduce the usual adaptation period required for a new signing. Wilson has spent more than a decade competing at the highest level in England and has experience of promotion battles, relegation fights and European qualification.

The key factors will be his fitness and wage demands. If both fit within Brentford’s structure, a free transfer could represent a relatively low-risk way to strengthen their attacking options.

Brentford will look to finalise the remaining details of Wilson’s contract, with an agreement reportedly possible within the next couple of weeks.

A successful medical and sensible wage package are likely to be important before the move is completed. If everything falls into place, the Bees would add a proven Premier League goalscorer without paying a transfer fee.
