Manchester United marked their return to the Champions League with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Sabah at Old Trafford, providing Michael Carrick with the ideal start to the league phase.

After a season without European football, United returned to Europe's elite competition in convincing fashion as Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes, Benjamin Sesko and Lisandro Martinez all found the net.

The result provides a timely confidence boost following an inconsistent start to their Premier League campaign, with attention now turning towards Sunday's Manchester derby.

United make comfortable Champions League return

United entered the game having collected only four points from their opening three Premier League fixtures, increasing the importance of beginning their European campaign positively.

Sabah represented a favourable opening assignment and Carrick's side made sure there was no unexpected setback at Old Trafford.

Cunha, Fernandes, Sesko and Martinez shared the goals as United secured a comfortable four-goal victory and their first three points of the Champions League league phase.

It was also United's first experience of the competition's new format after missing out on European football entirely last season.

Carrick manages squad ahead of Manchester derby

Carrick had Sunday's meeting with Manchester City to consider when selecting his team.

Marcus Rashford was named among the substitutes after recovering from the knock that forced him off during the 2-2 draw against Everton.

Luke Shaw, meanwhile, was left out of the matchday squad after Carrick had previously confirmed the defender was being carefully managed following the Everton game.

With United ultimately winning comfortably, the evening provided Carrick with the opportunity to negotiate their European return without jeopardising preparations for the much tougher assignment ahead.

Four different scorers provide attacking boost

One of the most encouraging aspects for Carrick was seeing four different players on the scoresheet.

Cunha and Sesko adding goals provides a welcome boost to United's attacking options, while captain Fernandes again made his contribution.

Martinez completing the scoring also capped an impressive evening at both ends of the pitch, with United recording a clean sheet alongside their four goals.

The challenge now is carrying that momentum into the Premier League.

Manchester City provide much tougher test

United have little time to celebrate their European victory.

Their attention immediately shifts to Sunday's Manchester derby, where they will face a Manchester City side enjoying an impressive start under new head coach Enzo Maresca.

That fixture should provide a much clearer indication of United's progress under Carrick than their comfortable Champions League opener.

A positive result against City would also help transform what has been a mixed beginning to the domestic campaign.

Key Points

  • Manchester United beat Sabah 4-0 on their return to the Champions League.
  • Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes, Benjamin Sesko and Lisandro Martinez scored the goals.
  • Marcus Rashford returned from his knock but started on the bench, while Luke Shaw was absent.
  • United now turn their attention to Sunday's Manchester derby against Manchester City.

What's Next?

United will quickly switch their focus back to the Premier League as Carrick prepares his players for the Manchester derby.

After taking four points from their opening three league matches, beating an in-form City side would represent a major early-season statement and build significantly on the confidence generated by their Champions League victory.
