Jesse Derry is close to joining Sporting on a season-long loan after agreeing a new long-term contract with Chelsea.

Football Place understands the highly-rated 19-year-old has signed fresh terms until 2032, just one year after arriving from Crystal Palace.

Derry is now expected to spend next season in Portugal, although the loan agreement with Sporting has not yet been finalised.

Jesse Derry agrees new Chelsea contract

Chelsea’s decision to hand Derry a new deal underlines their belief in a player who made rapid progress last season.

The winger scored 19 goals in 23 appearances for the Under-18s before moving up to the Under-21 side, where he featured in Premier League 2 and the UEFA Youth League.

His performances earned him first-team opportunities under Liam Rosenior and later interim manager Calum McFarlane.

Derry made his senior debut from the bench in Chelsea’s 4-0 FA Cup win over Hull City in February. He later started the 3-1 Premier League defeat against Nottingham Forest in May.

Playing from the left wing, the teenager impressed before being forced off on a stretcher following a clash of heads with Zach Abbott.

He finished the season with three senior appearances in all competitions.

Sporting loan offers Champions League opportunity

A move to Sporting would give Derry the chance to play regular senior football while continuing his development away from Stamford Bridge.

The Portuguese club can also offer potential Champions League exposure, making the loan an important next step after his breakthrough at Chelsea.

The two clubs already have a strong relationship. Chelsea are preparing to welcome Geovany Quenda after agreeing a £40m deal for the Sporting youngster last summer.

Derry’s proposed move would now take another highly-rated teenager in the opposite direction.

What’s next?

Chelsea and Sporting must now finalise the loan agreement before Derry can complete his move to Portugal.

Could a season at Sporting turn Jesse Derry into Chelsea’s next first-team star?
