Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano, taking the club's spending beyond €400 million this summer and handing Jorrel Hato fresh competition at left-back.
The 28-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge for a reported €19m upfront, with a further €2m payable in bonuses, becoming Chelsea's 11th signing of the transfer window.
His arrival comes after the departure of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid, giving head coach Xabi Alonso another option on the left side of defence.
Chelsea's summer spending passes €400m
Chelsea have once again been among Europe's busiest clubs in the transfer market.
Before completing Chavarria's arrival, the Blues had already invested around €388m on ten new signings. The Spaniard's transfer now pushes the club's total expenditure beyond the €400m mark.
Despite not competing in European football this season, Chelsea have continued to heavily strengthen their squad ahead of the new campaign.
Hato faces increased competition
Chavarria's arrival creates added competition for Jorrel Hato, who has featured primarily at left-back during pre-season.
Although the Dutch international finished much of last season in central defence, Alonso has regularly deployed him on the left during the summer preparations.
The addition of another natural left-back provides Chelsea with greater depth and tactical flexibility heading into the Premier League season.
Chavarria completes remarkable rise
The move represents the biggest transfer of Chavarria's career.
After beginning his senior career with UE Figueres, the defender spent several years in Spain's lower divisions before joining Real Zaragoza.
Rayo Vallecano signed him for less than €2m four years ago, and he developed into one of the club's most consistent performers.
Only a few months ago, Chavarria played the full 90 minutes in the UEFA Conference League final, where Rayo were beaten 1-0 by Crystal Palace.
Speaking after completing the move, Chavarria said: "This is a dream for me as Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs in the world. It is a big opportunity but I am prepared and will work hard to help the team achieve success."
