Lucas Bergvall's future at Tottenham Hotspur remains unresolved despite an encouraging pre-season under Roberto De Zerbi, with Nottingham Forest continuing to monitor the Swedish midfielder's situation.

The 20-year-old has been linked with a move away from north London throughout the summer after seeking greater first-team opportunities, although Tottenham have so far resisted interest from both Forest and Newcastle United.

Bergvall's long-term future remains open with the transfer window still several weeks from closing.

Bergvall impressed during pre-season

After returning from World Cup duty with Sweden, Bergvall has featured prominently during Tottenham's pre-season campaign.

Despite being one of the later players to rejoin the squad, the midfielder has started several friendlies as De Zerbi has looked to assess his options ahead of the new season.

Those opportunities have reportedly been well received by Bergvall's camp, with the Italian coach backing up his public praise by giving the youngster significant playing time.

However, there remains an acceptance that regular starts could become more difficult once competitive fixtures begin.

Midfield competition remains fierce

Bergvall's concerns over playing time initially emerged after Tottenham strengthened heavily in midfield.

The arrivals of Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, combined with the presence of Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Matar Sarr, Archie Gray and Conor Gallagher, have intensified competition for places.

Reports suggest Bergvall became frustrated last season by his limited opportunities to develop as a number eight, prompting his representatives to explore possible alternatives earlier this summer.

Despite that uncertainty, the midfielder has remained fully committed during pre-season and continues to impress the coaching staff.

Tottenham not eager to sell

Tottenham have already rejected approaches from Nottingham Forest and Newcastle and remain reluctant to sanction Bergvall's departure.

The Sweden international only signed a new six-year contract last year and continues to be highly regarded inside the club after being voted Tottenham's Player of the Year by supporters during his debut campaign.

Suggestions that Bergvall had been offered to Barcelona have also been dismissed by people close to the player.

Although his future remains uncertain, those around the midfielder insist he is focused solely on performing well and earning his place under De Zerbi.

Key Points

  • Lucas Bergvall's future at Tottenham remains unresolved.
  • Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United have both shown interest.
  • Roberto De Zerbi has regularly used Bergvall during pre-season.
  • Tottenham have already rejected approaches for the Swedish midfielder.
  • Spurs are reportedly unlikely to sell unless their valuation of more than £60m is met.

What Happens Next

With the transfer window still open, Bergvall's future will remain under close scrutiny. Nottingham Forest could return with another approach if Tottenham soften their stance, although De Zerbi's willingness to involve the midfielder during pre-season may yet persuade the club to retain one of their brightest young talents.

I think de Zerbi wants a big (midfield) option for next season, but the way he wants to play I don’t see Bergvall starting. They’ve bought Tonali and Fernandes He would play every game for Nottingham under Glasner and develop in a better player but 60m is I think a bit too much?
