Newcastle United could struggle to sign FC Porto midfielder Victor Froholdt in January, with transfer journalist Gianluca Di Marzio suggesting the Portuguese club are unlikely to sanction a winter departure.

The 20-year-old Denmark international has attracted attention from Premier League clubs following an impressive first season in Portugal.

However, his importance to Porto's plans could make a mid-season transfer particularly difficult.

Newcastle scouts watch Porto in Champions League

According to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, Newcastle representatives attended Porto's 1–0 Champions League defeat to PSV Eindhoven on 20 October.

Froholdt started the match and played 76 minutes before being replaced by Seko Fofana.

The Magpies have previously been linked with the midfielder, although the latest scouting visit does not confirm he was their primary target.

Tottenham Hotspur also reportedly sent representatives to watch Porto's September victory over Benfica, when Froholdt was among the standout performers.

The Danish international joined Porto from FC Copenhagen in July 2025 for a reported €20 million.

He established himself as a regular during the 2025–26 campaign, registering eight goals and seven assists in 51 appearances across all competitions.

Di Marzio warns Newcastle over January deal

Speaking to Danish publication Tipsbladet, Di Marzio highlighted Froholdt's importance to Porto and questioned whether the club would consider selling him midway through the season.

"Froholdt is a key player for Porto," he explained.

"It is really difficult to buy Porto players, so even if Newcastle and other clubs are crazy about him, it is unlikely that he will be allowed to move in January."

Di Marzio suggested Porto's ambitions in the Portuguese league and Champions League would make the midfielder especially difficult to prise away.

Froholdt remains under contract until June 2030, giving Porto a strong negotiating position.

His deal also reportedly contains an €85 million release clause, although that figure does not necessarily represent the club's asking price.

Newcastle may need to wait until summer

Froholdt has continued to develop as a versatile central midfielder capable of contributing both defensively and in attack.

His performances have attracted Premier League attention, but Newcastle would face competition if Porto eventually became willing to negotiate.

There is no confirmed January bid from the Magpies and no indication that the Portuguese club have opened talks over a potential sale.

Key Points

  • Newcastle scouts reportedly attended Porto's defeat to PSV.
  • Froholdt played 76 minutes in the Champions League fixture.
  • Gianluca Di Marzio believes a January departure is unlikely.
  • Tottenham have also reportedly watched Porto this season.
  • Froholdt's contract runs until June 2030.

What's Next?

Newcastle could continue assessing Froholdt ahead of the January transfer window, although Porto's reported reluctance to sell makes a winter agreement difficult.

A summer 2027 approach may prove more realistic if the Portuguese club become open to negotiations.
