Manchester City winger Jérémy Doku believes he is returning to his best after overcoming the calf injury that disrupted the opening weeks of his season.

The 24-year-old Belgium international has rediscovered his confidence under Enzo Maresca, with his impressive goal against Liverpool highlighting his renewed attacking threat.

Speaking to former Anderlecht coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck for Play Sports, Doku explained how his time on the sidelines helped him rebuild his fitness.

Doku reveals benefits of injury recovery

Doku missed several weeks of City's campaign before returning as a substitute during their 5–3 Premier League victory over Sunderland on 20 September.

The winger admitted that being unavailable for more than a month was frustrating, although he believes the break ultimately benefited him.

"In five to six weeks, you miss a lot of matches," he said.

"Sometimes it's good to reset. When I came back, I felt great."

Doku subsequently used the international break to continue working on his conditioning rather than joining Belgium's squad.

His return follows an impressive 2025–26 campaign in which he recorded eight goals and 11 assists across 47 appearances for Manchester City.

Liverpool performance restores confidence

Doku demonstrated his attacking ability during City's 3–0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on 11 October.

Introduced in the 56th minute, the Belgian caused immediate problems for Liverpool's defence.

Ryan Gravenberch received a second yellow card after attempting to stop Doku's counter-attack, leaving the hosts with ten men.

Doku then scored City's second goal in the 68th minute, cutting inside before curling an impressive effort beyond Alisson Becker.

The winger revealed that he had already been feeling confident before entering the match.

"I felt in top shape on the bench against Liverpool. I know I can hurt anyone," he explained.

His pace, close control and willingness to attack defenders remain central to his role in City's forward line.

Maresca and Guardiola share similar demands

Doku also discussed the transition from Pep Guardiola to Maresca, who took charge of Manchester City during the summer.

Despite the managerial change, the Belgium international believes his attacking responsibilities have remained largely consistent.

"He and Pep are asking for pretty much the same thing," Doku said.

"Do your thing on the wing, be dangerous and create chances."

Those instructions allow Doku to continue using his strengths in one-on-one situations while contributing to City's attacking combinations.
