Marcus Rashford return to Man Utd backed by Harry Maguire after Barcelona decision

Marcus Rashford's future remains one of Manchester United's biggest unanswered questions this summer, but Harry Maguire believes there is still a route back to Old Trafford if the circumstances are right for both player and club.

The England defender has publicly backed Rashford to rediscover his best form at United following his productive loan spell at Barcelona, although he insists any return must satisfy two important conditions. With Barcelona declining their reported £26 million option to sign the forward permanently, Rashford is expected to report back to Manchester United after England's World Cup campaign unless another transfer is agreed.

Rashford enjoyed one of the strongest campaigns of his career during the 2025/26 season. The 28-year-old scored 14 goals and provided 14 assists across all competitions as Barcelona lifted the La Liga title.

Despite those numbers, Barcelona chose not to complete a permanent deal after strengthening their attack with the £70 million signing of Anthony Gordon, leaving Rashford's long-term future unresolved.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Maguire admitted he would welcome his long-time teammate back at Manchester United but stressed the move can only succeed if both sides are fully committed.

"Yeah, of course, I have an amazing relationship with Marcus and have had some great times with him over the years.

"I know what a wonderful player he can be. I'm sure it's up to the club and up to Marcus to find a mutual agreement."

The United defender then outlined what he believes are the two essential ingredients for a successful reunion.

"Of course, if Marcus does come back, we want him to come back and play and be happy and confident. It needs to be right for himself, it needs to be right for the club, but everyone knows what a great player Marcus can be for whatever club he plays for next season."

The forward impressed during his first start of the tournament against Panama, producing an energetic display that drew praise from Maguire.

"I think he was so direct and positive with everything that he did.

"Rashy straight away took the game to Panama, and I think in the first 10 minutes, he put four or five crosses in the box. It wasn't as accurate as he normally is, and then he finds that one where Harry probably was unfortunate not to score."

Maguire also highlighted Rashford's willingness to attack defenders throughout the match.

"He was a constant threat throughout the game and when he's in that mood I think us England fans know how good he can be, and I've had the pleasure of playing with him at Manchester United for many years, so when he's in that frame and in that direct mode he's unstoppable on his day."

England's World Cup campaign remains Rashford's immediate priority as they target a place in the final on 19 July 2026. Once the tournament ends, the forward is expected to take a short summer break before reporting back to Manchester United for pre-season if no transfer has been completed. With Barcelona no longer pursuing a permanent move, the coming weeks should provide greater clarity over whether Rashford begins a new chapter elsewhere or is given another opportunity at Old Trafford.
