Chelsea’s Granit Xhaka approach rebuffed as Sunderland refuse to open transfer talks

Chelsea have seen an opening offer for Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka rejected after the Black Cats reiterated that the experienced midfielder is not available for transfer this summer.

Reports claim Chelsea submitted a bid worth around £8 million, but Sunderland immediately dismissed the proposal and remain adamant that one of their most influential players will not be sold.

The approach is understood to have been driven by incoming head coach Xabi Alonso, who is keen to reunite with the Switzerland international following their successful spell together at Bayer Leverkusen.

Chelsea's interest reportedly caught Sunderland by surprise, with club officials maintaining that Xhaka is not for sale regardless of the size of any offer.

The proposed fee reflected the midfielder's contract situation, with Xhaka turning 34 later this year and entering the final two seasons of his current deal.

Despite his age, Sunderland view the former Arsenal captain as a central figure in their long-term plans after an outstanding campaign that helped the club secure a Europa League place following a seventh-place Premier League finish.

At this stage, Chelsea have received no encouragement that Sunderland are willing to reconsider their position.

Xhaka's importance to Xabi Alonso is well established.

The pair enjoyed major success together at Bayer Leverkusen, where the midfielder played a crucial role in the club's Bundesliga-winning campaign under the Spanish coach.

Alonso is believed to have remained closely involved in Chelsea's transfer planning despite officially beginning work on 1 July, with Xhaka emerging as one of the manager's preferred targets.

Having followed Chelsea's recruitment strategy in recent years, this represents a notable shift in approach. The club have largely focused on signing young players with long-term potential, whereas Xhaka would bring immediate experience, leadership and tactical intelligence to a relatively youthful squad.

However, identifying a player and convincing his club to sell are two very different challenges, and Sunderland currently have no intention of weakening their midfield.

The pursuit of Xhaka reflects wider discussions inside Stamford Bridge over the balance of the squad.

Reports suggest Chelsea's hierarchy concluded during last season that the dressing room requires greater leadership and experience alongside its emerging young talent.

Xhaka's profile fits that requirement perfectly, but Sunderland's refusal to negotiate means Chelsea may now have to decide whether to test the Black Cats' resolve with an improved offer or pursue alternative targets.

Chelsea are expected to assess whether a second bid is worthwhile, although Sunderland's public stance leaves little room for optimism at this stage.

Unless the Black Cats soften their position later in the transfer window, Alonso may be forced to identify another experienced midfielder capable of providing the leadership qualities Chelsea are seeking ahead of the new season.
