Everton join Shea Charles transfer race as Southampton make £30m stance clear

Everton have emerged as the latest club to register their interest in Southampton midfielder Shea Charles, potentially complicating Leeds United's pursuit of one of the Championship's standout performers.

According to the Daily Mail, David Moyes' side have entered the race after Leeds saw two offers worth more than £20 million rejected. Southampton are under no immediate pressure to sell but are reportedly prepared to consider offers in the region of £30 million for the Northern Ireland international.

The growing interest comes after Charles established himself as one of Southampton's key players during the 2025/26 campaign despite the club's failure to secure promotion back to the Premier League.

Charles enjoyed an impressive season under Tonda Eckert, making 38 appearances in all competitions and playing a pivotal role in Southampton's run to the FA Cup semi-finals.

His most memorable contribution came in the quarter-finals, where he scored the winning goal in a surprise 2-1 victory over Arsenal.

Southampton's disappointing end to the campaign, which saw the club miss out on promotion following their expulsion from the Championship play-offs amid the widely discussed 'Spygate' controversy, has increased speculation over the futures of several first-team players.

However, the Saints are determined not to lose Charles cheaply. Reports suggest the Championship club value the midfielder at around £30 million, despite continued negotiations with Leeds United.

Charles' importance to the side extended beyond his statistics. His consistency in midfield, defensive awareness and ability to dictate possession made him one of the first names on Eckert's teamsheet. Even so, much could still depend on whether either interested club is prepared to match Southampton's asking price.

Everton's interest is understandable given the uncertainty surrounding Idrissa Gueye's future.

The experienced Senegal international is out of contract at the end of June and, at 36, is approaching the latter stages of his career despite remaining an important player under David Moyes last season.

Gueye featured 25 times in the Premier League and also started all three of Senegal's World Cup group-stage matches, underlining that he continues to perform at the highest level.

Nevertheless, Everton may now be planning for the future.

Charles operates in a similar defensive midfield role and impressed with his ball-winning ability throughout last season. He averaged 2.1 tackles per 90 minutes, the second-highest figure among Southampton players in the Championship, highlighting why Premier League clubs view him as a player capable of developing further.

While Everton's arrival adds fresh competition, Leeds United have not abandoned their pursuit.

Daniel Farke's side remain in discussions with Southampton after seeing two sizeable bids rejected, suggesting Charles remains a priority target as they continue strengthening their squad.

Whether Leeds are willing to increase their offer closer to Southampton's valuation remains uncertain, particularly for a player who has yet to establish himself in the Premier League on a consistent basis.

With Everton now monitoring the situation, Southampton may feel they are in an even stronger negotiating position during the remainder of the transfer window.

Charles is expected to remain one of Southampton's most sought-after assets as the summer window develops. Leeds United continue talks with the Championship club, while Everton's interest could trigger a bidding battle if they decide to formalise their pursuit. Southampton's current position suggests they are prepared to wait unless their valuation is met.
