Chelsea consider unexpected Cesare Casadei reunion after Torino breakthrough

Chelsea are reportedly considering a surprise move to re-sign former midfielder Cesare Casadei just over a year after sanctioning his permanent departure to Torino.

The Italy Under-21 international left Stamford Bridge in February 2025 in search of regular first-team football and has since rebuilt his reputation in Serie A. His impressive performances have now attracted fresh Premier League interest, with Chelsea emerging as an unexpected contender for his signature.

According to reports in Italy, the Blues are exploring the possibility of bringing Casadei back despite selling him less than two years ago.

Casadei enjoyed an impressive campaign with Torino, scoring seven goals in 36 appearances after becoming a key figure in midfield.

The 23-year-old struggled to establish himself during his first spell at Chelsea, making just 17 senior appearances while also spending time on loan at Reading and Leicester City.

Following his move to Turin, Casadei admitted he needed stability and a club where he felt valued.

Those performances have reportedly caught the attention of several clubs, including Everton, Brighton & Hove Albion and Spanish side Real Betis.

Chelsea have now entered the race despite allowing him to leave in 2025.

One factor making a potential deal more attractive is the agreement included when Casadei joined Torino.

Chelsea are understood to retain a 27.5% sell-on clause, meaning any future transfer would effectively reduce the overall cost of bringing the midfielder back to Stamford Bridge.

That financial advantage could place the Blues in a stronger position than rival clubs if Torino decide to negotiate.

The idea of re-signing a player they previously sold is unusual but not entirely unexpected. The club have shown a willingness to revisit former decisions when a player's development exceeds expectations, particularly if favourable contractual clauses remain in place.

However, whether the move makes sense from Casadei's perspective is another matter entirely.

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the report concerns Chelsea's long-term plans.

Rather than integrating Casadei directly into Xabi Alonso's first-team squad, the Blues are reportedly considering sending him straight back out on loan after completing the transfer.

Ipswich Town have been mentioned as a possible destination following their promotion to the Premier League.

That proposal appears difficult to reconcile with the midfielder's previous decision to leave Chelsea in pursuit of stability and consistent first-team football.

Having finally established himself at Torino, another temporary move may prove less attractive unless Chelsea can present a clear pathway into Alonso's long-term plans.

Chelsea are expected to continue monitoring Casadei's situation while progressing other transfer business, including the arrival of Marco Palestra.

For now, no formal offer has been submitted, while Torino are unlikely to entertain negotiations unless a significant proposal arrives.
