Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly been credited with making enquiries about Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, although recent developments in north London suggest any potential move may be far from straightforward.

According to reports from Argentina, Boca Juniors have identified the experienced goalkeeper as their priority target this summer. However, the Argentine club face competition after claims that Tottenham have also registered an interest in the 33-year-old.

While Spurs' reported enquiry is intriguing, the timing of that approach could prove just as important as the interest itself.

\Rulli remains a trusted player for Roberto De Zerbi

One reason Tottenham have been linked with Rulli is his close relationship with Roberto De Zerbi.

The pair worked together at Marseille for two seasons, with Rulli establishing himself as the Italian coach's undisputed first-choice goalkeeper throughout that period.

He made 73 appearances under De Zerbi across two campaigns, recording 14 clean sheets while becoming one of the manager's most trusted players.

That familiarity would naturally make the Argentina international an attractive option if Tottenham decided they needed another experienced goalkeeper.

Marseille are also believed to be open to discussions should a suitable offer arrive, with Rulli contracted until 2027 and valued at around €8.6 million.

Tottenham's recent moves complicate the picture

Despite the reported interest, Tottenham's current goalkeeping situation raises doubts about whether a move still makes sense.

Over recent days, Spurs have rewarded Antonin Kinsky with a new contract after the young goalkeeper finished last season as the club's first-choice option.

The club have also agreed the signing of experienced goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, who is expected to provide reliable backup.

Meanwhile, Guglielmo Vicario continues to be linked with a summer departure, although no agreement has yet been reached.

However, De Zerbi's long-standing trust in Rulli means the possibility of renewed interest cannot be dismissed completely if Tottenham's plans change before the transfer window closes.

Boca Juniors also pushing for deal

Boca Juniors remain determined to bring Rulli back to Argentina and are reportedly encouraged by the player's openness to the move.

The Argentine club still face two significant obstacles.

Firstly, Rulli may prefer to wait until he becomes a free agent before returning home, allowing him to join former club Estudiantes. Secondly, continued interest from European clubs, including Tottenham, could persuade him to remain in Europe for at least another season.

What's next?

Boca Juniors are expected to open formal talks with Marseille, while Tottenham's next move may depend on developments involving Guglielmo Vicario and their existing goalkeeping options.

Unless circumstances change in north London, Spurs appear well stocked between the posts, making it difficult to judge whether their reported interest in Rulli remains active or reflects earlier recruitment plans.

Would Geronimo Rulli improve Tottenham's squad, or should Roberto De Zerbi stick with Antonin Kinsky as his long-term number one?
