Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto faces an uncertain future at Fiorentina after struggling to secure regular playing time following his summer loan move.

The 22-year-old Italy international joined the Serie A club in September, hoping to regain momentum after a frustrating final season at Elland Road.

However, he has started just once in seven league appearances, raising questions about whether Fiorentina will exercise their reported €15million purchase option.

Gnonto struggling for opportunities at Fiorentina

According to Italian outlet FirenzeViola, Fiorentina's attacking options have come under scrutiny despite significant summer investment.

Gnonto arrived late in the transfer window, joining a squad already containing several players competing for positions out wide.

Alieu Njie and Real Madrid loanee Franco Mastantuono are among his rivals for a starting place.

The former Leeds winger has managed only 228 minutes in Serie A, recording no goals or assists.

His sole league start came against Genoa in October, while his other six appearances have been from the bench.

Gnonto has shown flashes of quality, including scoring in the Coppa Italia against Pisa, but has yet to establish himself as a regular.

Leeds face uncertainty over purchase option

Gnonto's departure followed a difficult 2025/26 campaign in which he made 29 appearances across all competitions for Leeds.

The move to Fiorentina was intended to provide more consistent opportunities, but competition for places has limited his involvement.

The Italian club reportedly paid around €1million for the season-long loan, with an option to make the transfer permanent for a further €15million.

That represents a significant investment for a player who has so far struggled to command a starting position.

However, there is no confirmation that Fiorentina have decided against exercising the option.

Competition could complicate Gnonto's future

Fiorentina's crowded attacking department means Gnonto must compete with several established options for minutes.

His ability to operate on either flank offers versatility, but he will need stronger performances to improve his prospects.

Leeds, meanwhile, will monitor his progress before the loan expires in June 2027.
