Arsenal midfielder Bruno Guimarães has admitted he needs to change his penalty-taking technique after a difficult run from the spot for club and country.

The Brazilian missed the decisive penalty in Arsenal's shock Carabao Cup shootout defeat against League Two side Fleetwood Town, having also failed to convert against Norway at the 2026 World Cup.

However, he responded by helping Arsenal secure a 1-0 Premier League victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

Guimarães admits penalty technique needs changing

Speaking to ESPN Brasil, the former Newcastle United midfielder acknowledged that his stuttering run-up has become ineffective.

"I tried it at the World Cup and I tried it here, and I've already seen that it doesn't work," he admitted.

"I'm humble enough to recognise that I need to improve, that I need to change the way I take them."

Guimarães has missed three of his last four penalties, a significant change from his earlier record.

Before the World Cup, he had converted seven of eight career attempts, including shootout penalties.

His efforts against Norway and Fleetwood followed a similar pattern, with both directed towards the goalkeeper's left at roughly the same height.

Despite those setbacks, the Brazilian remains determined to improve.

"I take three or four penalties a day," he revealed.

Guimarães believes regular practice will help him regain confidence and prepare for his next opportunity.

Arsenal midfielder responds against Liverpool

The 28-year-old quickly shifted his focus back to Premier League action following the Fleetwood disappointment.

Kai Havertz scored the only goal as Arsenal defeated Liverpool at Anfield for the first time in the league since 2012.

Guimarães contributed defensively as Mikel Arteta's side protected their narrow advantage against sustained Liverpool pressure.

The midfielder was also involved in a confrontation with Alexis Mac Allister during the closing stages.

"It's part of football. But I'll never bow my head to anyone," Guimarães said.

His response reflected the determination he has shown despite recent setbacks.
