Jamie Carragher has apologised to Aston Villa after the club threatened legal action over his comments about manager Unai Emery and a potential move to Manchester United.

The former Liverpool defender sparked controversy by suggesting Emery could be tempted to leave Villa Park for Old Trafford, arguing that United remain a bigger institution.

Villa chairman Nassef Sawiris condemned Carragher's remarks as "unacceptable insults", prompting the Sky Sports pundit to issue a public apology on Saturday.

Carragher's Manchester United comments spark backlash

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Carragher discussed Emery as a possible replacement for under-pressure Manchester United manager Michael Carrick.

The former Liverpool defender argued that successful managers could still be attracted to clubs with greater historical standing.

"Surely he would want that opportunity to manage a giant again," Carragher said.

He suggested that football has an established hierarchy in which certain clubs can attract players and managers from their rivals.

"Aston Villa will never be Manchester United," he added.

Carragher also used offensive language towards Villa supporters who had criticised his comments.

The remarks prompted a strongly worded response from Villa, with Sawiris announcing plans to pursue legal action.

Carragher apologises after Villa statement

Villa's statement, published on Friday, accused Carragher of insulting the club and its supporters.

The pundit responded on social media the following day, acknowledging that his language had been inappropriate.

"My language this week was clumsy and wrong," he wrote.

Carragher explained that his comments had been intended as humour but accepted they had caused offence.

"I can assure Villa fans it was tongue in cheek but I can understand it's not come across that way, so apologies."

However, Villa have not publicly confirmed that they have withdrawn their threat of legal action.

Emery remains central to Villa's ambitions

The controversy comes amid growing pressure on Carrick following Manchester United's difficult start to the Premier League season.

Emery has strengthened Villa's standing in European football, guiding the club to Europa League success last season.

Despite Carragher's suggestion, there is no confirmation that United have approached Emery or that the Spaniard wants to leave.
