Manchester United are reportedly monitoring Fulham defender Calvin Bassey ahead of the January transfer window as Michael Carrick considers ways to strengthen his defence.
The 26-year-old Nigeria international has impressed under Fulham manager Álvaro Arbeloa, establishing himself as an important figure at Craven Cottage.
However, Fulham are keen to extend his contract, potentially complicating any approach from United.
Manchester United track Bassey's progress
According to TEAMtalk, United have been impressed by Bassey's performances and are assessing him as a potential defensive addition.
The former Ajax centre-back joined Fulham in July 2023 and has developed into one of the club's most dependable players.
His physical strength, Premier League experience and ability to operate at centre-back or left-back make him an attractive option.
A source described as close to Bassey also highlighted his qualities in comments attributed to Footy-Africa.
"He is big, strong, very physical and has leadership attributes," the source said.
However, United have not submitted a confirmed offer, and there is no indication that formal negotiations have begun.
Fulham determined to keep Bassey
Bassey has retained a prominent role since Arbeloa took charge in July and has also worn the captain's armband.
His existing contract expires in June 2027, although Fulham hold an option to extend it by another year.
Arbeloa has publicly confirmed that securing a new agreement is among the club's priorities.
That leaves Fulham in a stronger position than the approaching expiry date might suggest.
United are not alone in monitoring the defender, with Newcastle, Everton, Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig also reportedly interested.
Carrick considers defensive reinforcements
United's defensive problems have increased scrutiny of Carrick's squad following a difficult run of results.
Recent defeats against Bournemouth and Como exposed weaknesses at the back, while uncertainty surrounding several defenders' futures has added to the need for longer-term planning.
Bassey's experience and versatility could offer United another option, although persuading Fulham to sell midway through the season may prove difficult.
