Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has questioned the decision not to award his side a penalty during Sunday's 1-0 Premier League defeat against Arsenal at Anfield.

Kai Havertz scored the winner in the 16th minute, ending Arsenal's 14-year wait for a league victory at Liverpool.

However, a controversial first-half incident involving Alexander Isak and Jurrien Timber left Iraola and captain Virgil van Dijk frustrated with the officials.

Iraola questions decision over Isak shirt pull

Liverpool appealed for a penalty when Timber appeared to pull Isak's shirt as the striker attempted to reach a delivery into the Arsenal penalty area.

Referee Andy Madley allowed play to continue, with VAR declining to recommend an on-field review.

"The Alex one is a clear penalty," Iraola insisted afterwards.

The Liverpool manager questioned whether Isak's decision to stay on his feet had worked against him.

"Because he doesn't go to the floor, you are not going to call the penalty. I don't understand it."

Asked whether he would encourage Isak to go down in similar circumstances, Iraola replied: "Yes, definitely."

The decision proved significant as Liverpool failed to find an equaliser despite enjoying spells of pressure.

Van Dijk and pundits criticise VAR

Liverpool captain Van Dijk also felt his side should have been awarded a spot-kick.

"I think it was a clear penalty. I've seen it back and I've seen it being given," the defender said.

Van Dijk questioned why players should need to exaggerate contact when officials have access to multiple camera angles.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was equally critical of VAR's failure to intervene.

Daniel Sturridge and Ian Wright also argued during Sky Sports' half-time coverage that the shirt pull warranted a penalty.

Arsenal move clear at Premier League summit

Despite Liverpool's protests, Arsenal held on to secure their first league win at Anfield since 2012.

The result lifted Mikel Arteta's side to 24 points, three clear of Manchester City at the top.

Liverpool remained fifth, nine points behind the leaders, after failing to turn their attacking pressure into a goal.

Key Points

  • Arsenal beat Liverpool 1-0 through Havertz's first-half goal.
  • Iraola and Van Dijk criticised the decision not to penalise Timber's challenge on Isak.
  • Arsenal moved three points clear at the top of the Premier League.

What's Next?

Liverpool will look to recover from the defeat, while the disputed decision could prompt further debate over VAR's approach to shirt-pulling and players staying on their feet.
