Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez has revealed he is unable to eat solid food while recovering from a broken jaw sustained in a frightening collision against Everton.
The 34-year-old Argentina international underwent surgery after clashing heads with Jarrad Branthwaite during Chelsea's 2-0 victory at Goodison Park's successor, the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Despite the injury, Martínez hopes to return for Argentina's November internationals.
Martínez reveals difficulties after surgery
Speaking in an interview reported by TyC Sports, Martínez explained how the injury has affected his daily routine.
"Right now, I can't eat anything solid—everything has to be puréed; I'm like a baby," he revealed.
The goalkeeper underwent surgery involving a plate and four screws, with three teeth also affected during the procedure.
He has managed to maintain his weight with help from a nutritionist, although he admitted occasionally feeling weaker during training.
Martínez has already returned to light exercise as he works towards a return to competitive football.
Chelsea goalkeeper recalls frightening collision
Martínez also admitted he remembers little about the incident that left him requiring lengthy treatment on the pitch.
"The only thing I remember is the foul committed by Caicedo," Martínez explained.
The goalkeeper said he could not recall the collision itself or leaving the stadium.
He also described experiencing visual disturbances for several days afterwards.
"Honestly, I'd rather have a jaw injury than a head injury," he said.
Chelsea subsequently confirmed that Martínez had undergone successful surgery after being taken to hospital.
The Argentine also revealed he has required two operations in two months, having previously hoped to finish his career without surgery.
Martínez targets Argentina return
Despite the setback, Martínez remains hopeful of representing Argentina during November's international break.
He has spoken with the national team's coaching staff and wants to be available for their upcoming friendlies.
However, the goalkeeper acknowledged that his involvement will depend on how his recovery progresses.
Chelsea will continue assessing his condition before clearing him to return.
