Former Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones has received strong backing from Paolo Di Canio despite a difficult start to his Inter Milan career.
The 25-year-old England international joined Inter permanently in August but has struggled to establish himself in the starting line-up.
Jones is currently recovering from an adductor injury that ruled him out of Saturday's 3-1 derby defeat against AC Milan.
However, Di Canio believes he could become an important part of Inter's midfield once fit.
Di Canio defends Jones after Milan derby
Speaking on Sky Sport Italia, Di Canio defended Jones during a discussion about Inter's midfield problems following their defeat to Milan.
The former Italy international criticised Nicolò Barella's performance and argued that Inter needed greater intensity in midfield.
He believes Jones could eventually offer a more effective alternative.
"Remember: Curtis Jones will be the starter," Di Canio said.
"He provides counter-attack and also helps out in front of the defence."
Di Canio suggested the English midfielder's physicality and defensive contribution would help Inter regain control of matches.
Former Inter manager Stefano Pioli also praised Jones' versatility during the discussion.
Liverpool departure followed Inter interest
Jones completed his move from Liverpool on 21 August, ending a 16-year association with his boyhood club.
The midfielder joined Inter in a deal reportedly worth around €35million, including potential bonuses.
He signed a five-year contract running until June 2031.
Jones had made 228 senior appearances for Liverpool, winning six major trophies, including two Premier League titles.
His move offered an opportunity for a fresh challenge in Serie A, although injuries have disrupted his early progress.
Injury delays Jones' progress at Inter
Inter confirmed on 8 October that Jones had suffered a myofascial strain in the adductor muscles of his right thigh.
The injury has kept him out of five Serie A matches, including the defeat to Milan.
Di Canio believes Jones could eventually challenge Barella for a regular starting position, but the midfielder must first regain full fitness.
