Inter's pursuit of Curtis Jones has reached another impasse, with Liverpool refusing to lower their valuation despite the midfielder entering the final year of his contract.
The Serie A side revived their interest after first trying to sign Jones during the January transfer window, but the same issue that blocked a move six months ago is still preventing an agreement.
Liverpool unwilling to compromise on Jones valuation
Inter's initial approach came late in the winter window, leaving little time to negotiate a deal. The Italian club hoped to sign Jones on loan before making the move permanent, but Liverpool never considered that option and talks quickly came to an end.
Discussions resumed after the season finished, yet neither side has shifted its position.
Inter are prepared to spend around €20-25 million, believing that represents fair value for a player with just one year remaining on his contract. Liverpool, however, continue to demand around €40 million (£34m) and have shown little sign of softening their stance.
There has also been no significant progress over a contract extension for Jones at Anfield, although Liverpool are clearly not under pressure to sell on Inter's terms.
For now, the transfer is effectively on hold. Inter still admire the England midfielder and have not ruled out returning later in the window, but a breakthrough looks unlikely unless one club changes its valuation.
Frattesi's future could reshape Inter's plans
Inter's midfield business may ultimately depend on what happens with Davide Frattesi.
Although no formal bids have arrived, Nottingham Forest remain among the clubs monitoring the Italy international. Back in Serie A, Roma continue to be linked with a player who came through their academy, while Napoli are also keeping tabs on his situation.
Another possibility being discussed in Italy is a deal involving Juventus. Andrea Cambiaso has been mentioned as a potential makeweight if talks between the two clubs develop later in the transfer window, although nothing concrete has emerged at this stage.
Should Frattesi leave, Inter would have greater room to strengthen their midfield, potentially allowing them to revisit a move for Jones before the summer window closes.
What happens next?
Liverpool's position remains clear: they will not let Jones leave below their valuation simply because his contract is running down. Inter, meanwhile, appear reluctant to stretch beyond what they believe is a fair price.
That leaves the two clubs waiting for circumstances to change. A sale elsewhere, a fresh round of negotiations or movement on Frattesi's future could all reopen the conversation, but for now the deal remains firmly at a standstill.
Do you think Liverpool's valuation is justified, or should Inter look elsewhere for midfield reinforcements?
