Benfica's hopes of bringing João Palhinha back to Portugal have received a significant boost after Bayern Munich signalled they are prepared to sanction a loan move instead of insisting on an immediate permanent transfer.
The Bundesliga champions had been looking to recover around €25 million for the Portugal international this summer, but that stance now appears to have softened after interest from abroad failed to produce the outcome either club or player wanted.
Bayern willing to negotiate a loan deal
For much of the window, a permanent transfer looked like the only realistic route to signing Palhinha. While Benfica value the midfielder highly, committing around €25 million before making a major sale would have represented a sizeable financial gamble.
That obstacle has now eased.
According to reports in Portugal, Bayern are open to sending the 31-year-old out on loan, provided Benfica pay an initial loan fee. Any long-term agreement would then be negotiated separately, giving the Portuguese club far greater flexibility in how they structure the deal.
It is a compromise that could suit both sides. Bayern reduce their wage bill while keeping control over the player's future, and Benfica avoid a major upfront transfer fee this summer.
Palhinha's decision has changed the picture
The shift has not come solely from Bayern.
Palhinha himself is understood to have turned down offers worth around €25 million from clubs in Saudi Arabia and Turkey, despite those proposals matching Bayern's valuation.
Instead, the midfielder wants to remain at the highest level of European football. That preference has encouraged Bayern to explore alternative solutions rather than pushing him towards a move he has no desire to make.
It also leaves Benfica with a genuine opportunity to bring back one of Portuguese football's most accomplished midfielders.
Marco Silva remains a key admirer
Palhinha continues to be highly regarded by Marco Silva, who knows the midfielder well from their time together, while Benfica have also identified him as an experienced addition capable of strengthening their midfield immediately.
The challenge now lies with Benfica's board.
Although a loan is considerably more achievable than a €25 million purchase, the Lisbon club would still need to cover a loan fee alongside Palhinha's salary, making the financial package far from straightforward. Their room for manoeuvre could also depend on whether they complete a significant outgoing transfer before the end of the window.
What happens next?
Bayern have made it clear they are willing to discuss a different structure, and Palhinha has shown he is not prepared to leave Europe simply for financial reasons.
That leaves Benfica with an opportunity that did not appear to exist earlier in the summer. Whether they can now put together a package that satisfies Bayern remains the biggest question, but the path to a deal is certainly clearer than it was only a few weeks ago.
Would João Palhinha be the ideal signing for Benfica, or should the club invest in a younger long-term option?
