Gustavo Sá set for West Ham transfer after €20m deal

West Ham United have reached an agreement to sign Gustavo Sá from Famalicão in a deal worth around €20 million (£17.3m), according to reports in Portugal.

Portuguese outlet Record says the 21-year-old midfielder is set to leave Famalicão and join the Hammers ahead of the 2026/27 season, with broadcaster V+ first reporting the agreement.

The transfer has not yet been officially announced by either club, but the reported fee would make Sá the biggest sale in Famalicão’s history.

West Ham have negotiated the price down from the €25m (£21.6m) figure the Portuguese club had initially been seeking, although the final agreement still represents a major investment for a side preparing to compete in the Championship.

Sá has been on the radar of English clubs for more than a year, but West Ham now appear to have won the race for one of the most highly rated young midfielders in Portugal.

The Portugal Under-21 international joined Famalicão’s academy at Under-15 level in 2018 and made his senior debut during the 2022/23 season. He has since developed into a key first-team player, making 120 appearances while scoring 12 goals and providing 15 assists.

His progress has also included a notable piece of Portuguese football history. On 6 March 2026, Sá became the youngest player to reach 100 appearances in Portugal’s top flight, achieving the landmark at the age of 21 years, three months and 24 days.

That level of senior experience is one reason West Ham’s investment is significant. Sá remains a young player, but he arrives with considerably more first-team football behind him than many midfielders of a similar age.

Sá is primarily an attacking midfielder, although his experience in Portugal has shown that he can operate in different central roles.

His technical ability allows him to receive the ball in crowded areas and link midfield with the attack, while his work rate gives him the flexibility to contribute without possession. That versatility could be particularly useful during a Championship season in which West Ham will face different types of opponents and tactical challenges.

Having followed West Ham’s difficult 2025/26 campaign, the need for a refreshed midfield is clear. Relegation has changed the immediate context around the club, but the reported move for Sá suggests the Hammers are still prepared to invest heavily in young players who can contribute now and retain long-term value.

A €20m fee is substantial by Championship standards. It also indicates that Sá is not being signed simply as a development project. West Ham will expect him to compete for an important role as they target an immediate return to the Premier League.

However, the transfer remains subject to official confirmation, and adapting from the Primeira Liga to the physical and relentless schedule of the Championship will be a new challenge.

The deal is also significant for Famalicão.

The Portuguese club had reportedly hoped to receive €25m for Sá, but the agreed figure of around €20m is still expected to become the largest sale in their history. It would surpass the revenue eventually generated from Manuel Ugarte’s staged move away from the club.

For Famalicão, Sá’s departure represents another major return on a player developed through their system. He joined their academy in 2018 after previously spending time with Porto and progressed into the senior side before establishing himself as one of the club’s most valuable assets.

His reported move to England will now give him the first experience outside Portuguese football of his professional career.

The next stage will be formal completion of the transfer, with official confirmation from West Ham and Famalicão still awaited.

Further details over Sá’s contract and his arrival in England should become clearer once the deal is finalised. West Ham will then look to integrate the Portugal Under-21 international into their pre-season plans as preparations intensify for the 2026/27 Championship campaign.

The size of the fee means attention will quickly turn to where Sá fits into the midfield and whether West Ham intend to make further major additions around him before the transfer window closes.
