Feyenoord general manager Robert Eenhoorn has defended the club's decision to reject Nottingham Forest's attempts to sign Givairo Read during the summer transfer window.
The 20-year-old right-back also attracted interest from Roma, but Feyenoord decided to retain him rather than accept a substantial transfer fee.
Forest and Roma failed in Read pursuit
According to Voetbal International, Nottingham Forest had three offers rejected before Roma entered the race.
Reports suggested Roma's proposed package reached €29million including bonuses, while Feyenoord were seeking approximately €33million as a fixed fee.
Neither club secured an agreement, leaving Read at De Kuip.
Eenhoorn explains Feyenoord decision
Speaking to ESPN, Eenhoorn said the club believed Read needed another season of regular football following an injury-disrupted campaign.
"In Read's case, we felt he needed to play more matches — that he still had room to develop further," he said.
The Feyenoord chief believes the defender's performances this season have justified the decision.
He also compared retaining talented footballers to keeping valuable paintings.
"If you have a Rembrandt and a Van Gogh hanging on your wall and you don't sell them, they're still there on your wall," he explained.
Eenhoorn acknowledged the importance of financial discipline but stressed that keeping valuable players also benefits Feyenoord on the pitch.
Read remains central to Feyenoord plans
Read is contracted until June 2029, giving the Dutch club a strong position in any future negotiations.
His immediate focus remains developing at Feyenoord after the summer's unsuccessful transfer approaches.
