Christian Nørgaard has explained why he chose to leave Arsenal for Everton, revealing his desire for a bigger role was the main reason behind his move to Goodison Park.
The Denmark international completed his transfer after spending just one season at the Emirates, where he helped Arsenal win the Premier League title and reach the Champions League final.
Nørgaard wanted more opportunities
Despite being part of a successful Arsenal squad, Nørgaard struggled for regular minutes under Mikel Arteta.
The experienced midfielder was largely viewed as a squad player and was occasionally used in defence rather than his preferred midfield position.
Seeking a more prominent role, the 32-year-old decided the time was right for a new challenge.
Everton project convinced midfielder
Speaking to ESPN after completing his move, Nørgaard revealed conversations with manager David Moyes played a major part in his decision.
"I felt I needed a change and to play a bigger football role."
The Danish international also praised Everton's long-term vision.
"When I spoke to David Moyes and others at the club involved in the transfer, I heard about the whole project and I was very intrigued."
"Coming here just makes that feeling even stronger."
Fresh challenge on Merseyside
While Everton are aiming to establish themselves in the top half of the Premier League rather than compete for major honours, Nørgaard believes regular football is the priority at this stage of his career.
The Toffees hope his experience at both domestic and European level will strengthen their midfield as Moyes continues reshaping the squad ahead of the new campaign.
