Yan Diomande reportedly turned down the chance to join Liverpool before completing his blockbuster move to Real Madrid, with the club's long-term project and Jose Mourinho playing decisive roles in his decision.

Liverpool were among the clubs pushing to sign the highly-rated winger earlier this summer, but ultimately refused to match RB Leipzig's valuation before Real Madrid completed a deal worth up to €140 million.

Liverpool unable to complete deal

The Reds explored a move for Diomande and submitted a bid worth £85 million, but RB Leipzig rejected the offer.

Paris Saint-Germain were also heavily involved in the race, while Real Madrid eventually secured the 19-year-old with a package worth €125 million upfront plus €15 million in bonuses.

Diomande has signed a seven-year contract at the Santiago Bernabéu as part of Mourinho's major squad rebuild.

Iraola meeting failed to convince

According to The Athletic, Diomande held talks with Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola before making his final decision.

Although Liverpool were viewed as one of the favourites for his signature, the teenager reportedly felt the club was entering a transition period, leading him to believe Real Madrid offered a stronger environment for his development.

The opportunity to compete immediately for major honours also proved influential.

Mourinho made the difference

Diomande's agent, Nathan Campbell, revealed Mourinho's personal involvement was crucial in convincing the youngster.

"The final piece was Jose Mourinho."

Campbell explained that Mourinho held detailed conversations with Diomande in fluent French, discussing his tactical plans, the club's project and how the winger would fit into the team.

"That was a massive point. The key to convincing him."

The Athletic also reports that Real Madrid presented Diomande with a detailed development plan, using players such as Vinícius Júnior as examples of how young talents have progressed at the club.
