Newcastle United are making a move for Christian Kofane, but Arsenal may hold an important advantage in the race for the Bayer Leverkusen striker.

The 20-year-old has attracted interest from several major clubs after his first season in Germany, with Arsenal already maintaining contact with his representatives. Newcastle have now joined the pursuit as Eddie Howe looks to strengthen his attacking options.

According to Bild, however, Leverkusen have little interest in selling cheaply. The Bundesliga club are looking for a fee close to €100 million for a player they signed from Albacete for just €5.25m in July 2025.

That valuation presents a major obstacle for both Premier League clubs. Yet Arsenal’s longer-standing interest and European football could leave them better placed if the transfer race becomes serious.

Newcastle make move for Christian Kofane

Newcastle are looking to add more attacking quality this summer and have already reached an agreement with Hoffenheim for Bazoumana Touré.

Their recruitment plans do not appear to stop there.

Kofane has emerged as another target, with Newcastle now making a move for the Cameroon international. The attraction is understandable despite the striker spending much of last season as a substitute.

He still produced seven goals and nine assists in 1,983 minutes across 44 appearances. For a young forward adapting to German football and operating without a guaranteed starting place, those numbers have been enough to draw attention from England and Spain.

Newcastle’s challenge is convincing the player.

Bild questions whether Kofane would favour a move to Tyneside after the club failed to qualify for European competition. That could become significant when Arsenal and Barcelona have already been credited with concrete interest.

The Magpies can offer a major Premier League project and the prospect of a substantial role, but they may need to overcome both stronger European competition and Leverkusen’s valuation.

Leverkusen’s €100m stance could stop the race before it starts

The biggest question is whether any interested club will get close to Leverkusen’s demand.

Kofane is under contract until 2029, leaving the German club in a strong negotiating position. They do not need to sell and have already seen his value rise sharply since paying €5.25m for him only a year ago.

Transfermarkt now values the forward at €40m, but Leverkusen are reportedly looking for something much closer to €100m.

That is a huge gap.

Neither Arsenal nor Newcastle are expected to offer anything close to that figure at present, which could leave the entire transfer dependent on whether Leverkusen eventually soften their position.

The Bundesliga club may simply view the valuation as the price required to lose a player they expect to become considerably more valuable. Kofane’s first season showed promise rather than finished-product numbers, but his age and output have created the belief that his ceiling is much higher.

Arsenal have the edge, but Newcastle can still change the race

At this stage, Arsenal appear to have the stronger position without having a deal close.

They have maintained contact with Kofane’s camp, their interest has been described as serious and they can offer the European football Newcastle currently cannot.

None of that matters if they refuse to meet Leverkusen’s demands.

Newcastle’s arrival introduces another possible route for the player and gives the German club the prospect of Premier League competition driving up the price. If the Magpies make the first formal offer, Arsenal may have to decide how strongly they want to protect their advantage.

However, it remains too early to describe either club as close to signing Kofane. Leverkusen’s reported €100m valuation is far above what the interested sides are currently expected to pay.

The race is developing. The negotiation has not truly started.

What’s Next?

Newcastle must decide whether to follow their interest with a formal offer, while Arsenal will be aware that their early advantage could disappear if they remain passive.

The decisive factor is likely to be Leverkusen’s valuation. Unless the German club lower their demands, Kofane may remain beyond what either Premier League side are prepared to spend. A concrete Arsenal bid would reportedly change the balance of the race, but Newcastle’s arrival means the Gunners can no longer assume they have time on their side.

Should Arsenal move first for Christian Kofane, or is Leverkusen’s reported €100m price simply too high?
