Brighton have joined West Ham in the race to sign Sevilla winger Rubén Vargas and are reportedly preparing a formal offer for the Switzerland international.

West Ham made the first move by contacting Sevilla to assess the 27-year-old’s situation, but Brighton have now stepped up their interest following his impressive World Cup performances.

According to Marca and Mundo Deportivo, Fabian Hürzeler’s side intend to submit an official proposal as competition for Vargas increases.

Brighton step up Rubén Vargas transfer interest

Vargas has raised his profile during Switzerland’s World Cup campaign, contributing two goals and one assist in four appearances.

His performances have attracted interest from several clubs, with Trabzonspor and other Premier League sides also monitoring the situation. Brighton, however, are now presented as the latest serious contender.

A formal bid from the Seagulls would represent the first concrete offer reported this summer. West Ham have already made enquiries, but there is no indication that they have submitted a proposal.

That could give Brighton an opportunity to move ahead in the race.

Sevilla hope World Cup form increases Vargas value

Sevilla are closely following developments as they look to generate transfer income this summer.

The Spanish club rejected a €15m offer from Villarreal last year and will hope Vargas’ performances for Switzerland have increased his market value.

The winger’s World Cup form has been particularly significant after an injury-hit club season in which he missed more than 10 matches.

Despite the growing transfer speculation, Vargas insists his focus remains on Switzerland.

“We all want to win and be honest with each other. That’s what makes a good team,” he said ahead of the last-16 meeting with Colombia.

For West Ham, Brighton’s arrival makes the situation more difficult. Graham Potter’s side were first to make contact, but the Seagulls now appear ready to test Sevilla with a formal offer.
