Crystal Palace face uphill battle for Yann Bisseck after Inter stance changes

Crystal Palace’s interest in Yann Bisseck has not disappeared, but the circumstances surrounding a possible deal have changed so significantly over the past twelve months that what once looked realistic now feels like one of the more complicated transfer pursuits of their summer.

The Crystal Palace hierarchy pushed hard for the German defender last year, making serious attempts to convince Inter Milan to part ways with the versatile centre-back, but the timing ultimately worked against them.

Inter had already sanctioned the departure of Benjamin Pavard and were unwilling to weaken their defensive depth further so late in the window, especially in a season where squad balance remained crucial.

At the time, the rejection felt frustrating for Palace.

Now, it may look like a missed opportunity altogether.

Because over the course of this season, Yann Bisseck has shifted from being a valuable squad player into someone increasingly viewed as central to Inter’s defensive future.

That changes everything.

According to reports from Italy, Palace’s pursuit of Bisseck last summer came closer than many realised, with Oliver Glasner’s side putting forward an offer in the region of €30million.

Inter’s position at that stage was shaped more by squad necessity than by a lack of willingness to sell, but the picture heading into this summer is fundamentally different because the club’s sporting view of Bisseck has evolved.

Under Cristian Chivu, the defender has become increasingly important, largely because of his tactical flexibility and his ability to cover multiple roles across the back line without disrupting structure.

That kind of profile has enormous value in modern football.

It is not just his versatility that has strengthened his position either.

Internally, there is growing appreciation for the way Bisseck defends space, recovers in transition and drives the ball forward under pressure, qualities that have become increasingly important in Inter’s build-up play.

Those details explain why Inter no longer view him as a player available for negotiation unless something extraordinary changes.

That leaves Palace in a difficult position.

Oliver Glasner remains eager to strengthen defensively, and Bisseck’s profile still fits what Palace want in a physically dominant but technically comfortable centre-back.

But footballing ambition matters.

If Bisseck leaves Inter this summer, the expectation would be that his next move either matches his current competitive level or pushes him further upwards.

That means Champions League football, title challenges or elite-level wages are likely to shape the conversation.

Crystal Palace, despite clear progress under Glasner, may struggle to compete on all three fronts.

That does not make a deal impossible.

However, it does mean Palace would need to offer something far more compelling than they did last year, whether financially or through sporting guarantees.

Inter’s summer planning will determine whether any defensive departures are even considered, but as things stand Bisseck is not viewed as expendable and would only become available under exceptional circumstances.

Crystal Palace may revisit their interest, but unless Inter’s position softens or the player actively pushes for a move, negotiations would be extremely difficult to progress.

For now, Palace’s best chance may have been the one that passed last summer.
