Xabi Alonso faces most crucial Chelsea week yet ahead of Brentford test

Xabi Alonso is facing arguably the most important week of his Chelsea tenure as he attempts to address the defensive problems threatening to undermine his encouraging start at Stamford Bridge.

Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Hull City exposed familiar weaknesses. Chelsea surrendered another lead, made costly individual errors and extended their run without a Premier League clean sheet to 20 matches.

With a difficult trip to Brentford coming next, Alonso has a valuable week on the training ground to find solutions.

Chelsea took the lead against Hull through Morgan Rogers before seven chaotic first-half minutes completely changed the match.

Wesley Fofana, Malo Gusto and Jorrel Hato were involved in the defensive breakdown that allowed Mohamed Belloumi to equalise, while goalkeeper Emi Martinez struggled during the sequence that produced Hull’s second.

Alonso subsequently described Chelsea as “soft” defensively and admitted the same problems continue to appear.

“This result repeats patterns we are making,” he said. “It will take time to fix them.”

Chelsea’s attack has continued producing goals, but Alonso has yet to find the same stability elsewhere.

The midfield has struggled to control games, defensive errors remain costly and Martinez has endured a difficult beginning to his Chelsea career.

There could at least be significant reinforcements ahead of the Brentford clash.

Moises Caicedo is closing in on his return, while summer arrivals Jordan Henderson and Marco Palestra could also become available after missing the opening weeks of the campaign.

Caicedo's return would be particularly important. Chelsea have badly missed his defensive aggression and ability to bring control to midfield.

Alonso previously suggested injuries have prevented him from fully implementing his preferred style, but improving availability will increase expectations for immediate progress.

Chelsea travel to the Gtech Community Stadium on Friday knowing they have not won there since 2021.

That makes Brentford vs Chelsea a significant test immediately before the three-week international break.

Keith Andrews’ side possess qualities capable of exploiting Chelsea’s current weaknesses, particularly through their physical midfield and powerful striker Igor Thiago.

Another failure to win would leave Alonso facing uncomfortable questions throughout the break.

Chelsea's manager already knows what needs fixing. After another week on the training ground, the pressure is now on him to show tangible progress.

Alonso has a crucial week of training to improve Chelsea’s defensive structure and mentality before Friday’s trip to Brentford. With several important players potentially returning, the manager will be expected to show that Chelsea are beginning to solve their recurring problems.
