Floyd Samba announces himself with dream Manchester City debut against Norwich

Manchester City cruised into the fourth round of the League Cup with a 5-0 victory over Norwich City, but 17-year-old Floyd Samba ensured the evening belonged to him.

Enzo Maresca made significant changes following City’s Manchester derby victory, handing opportunities to several young players. The rotated side remained completely dominant, with Norwich failing to register a single shot on target against stand-in goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli.

Samba was the standout performer, scoring twice on his senior debut as City demonstrated the depth available to Maresca.

City controlled proceedings from the opening stages but had to wait until just before the half-hour mark for their breakthrough.

Samba provided it, arriving inside the penalty area to meet a dangerous cross and directing his header into the bottom-left corner.

Only three minutes later, Rayan Cherki doubled the advantage. The Frenchman created space with an impressive turn before finding the bottom corner to send City into half-time firmly in control.

There was no let-up after the break.

Allan carried the ball into the Norwich penalty area and calmly finished into the bottom-right corner for 3-0 before Samba struck again less than six minutes later.

The teenager found space around the edge of the box and produced another composed finish to complete his debut brace.

City continued attacking despite establishing a comfortable advantage, allowing another youngster to make his mark.

Substitute Ryan McAidoo received possession inside the penalty area late on and fired into the left corner to complete the 5-0 victory.

For Maresca, the result provided an opportunity to rest several established players without sacrificing performance or control.

The biggest story, however, was Samba. Scoring twice at just 17 on his Manchester City debut represents an outstanding introduction to senior football and gives Maresca another exciting academy talent to consider as the season develops.

Manchester City now advance to the fourth round of the League Cup, with Maresca’s younger players having made a convincing case for further opportunities.

Samba will attract particular attention after his two-goal introduction. The challenge for the 17-year-old is now to build on a memorable debut and earn further senior minutes in City’s crowded squad.
