West Ham United are preparing to make an official complaint to the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) following the controversial VAR decision that denied them a dramatic late equaliser against Arsenal.

The Hammers thought they had rescued a potentially crucial point in Sunday’s Premier League clash when Callum Wilson scored deep into stoppage time at the London Stadium.

However, after a lengthy VAR review, referee Chris Kavanagh overturned the goal after being advised to review a foul on David Raya in the build-up.

The decision preserved Arsenal’s 1-0 victory and left West Ham deeper in relegation trouble.

West Ham furious over VAR intervention

According to reports, West Ham believe the length and nature of the review itself undermines the argument that a “clear and obvious error” had been made.

The decision reportedly took more than four minutes to complete, with Kavanagh said to have viewed the incident repeatedly on the pitchside monitor before eventually disallowing the goal.

West Ham are now expected to formally question whether the threshold for VAR intervention was correctly applied.

The club could also request access to communication between Kavanagh and VAR official Darren England during the incident.

Having followed the Premier League’s ongoing VAR controversies closely, disputes around consistency and interpretation remain one of the competition’s most divisive issues.

Arsenal relieved as title dream moves closer

For Arsenal, the decision could prove season-defining.

Mikel Arteta’s side are now within touching distance of a first Premier League title in 22 years after Leandro Trossard’s goal secured all three points.

Arteta defended the officials after the game and praised them for overturning what he viewed as an obvious foul.

The result leaves Arsenal five points clear at the top of the table, although the title race remains dependent on upcoming results involving Manchester City.

Frustration grows inside West Ham

West Ham’s reaction after the match reflected growing anger around the decision.

Manager Nuno Espírito Santo questioned the lack of clarity around officiating standards.

“They have to solve it; they have to come to the clubs and explain the reasons behind different decisions.”

He also admitted there is increasing confusion around what officials consider sufficient contact inside the penalty area.

Club captain Jarrod Bowen echoed those concerns.

“If you look at some of the decisions for long enough you’ll find something to give.”

The winger argued physical contact from corners is common throughout the Premier League and questioned whether similar incidents would now face the same scrutiny consistently.

Why the decision matters so much

The controversy arrives at a critical stage of the season.

West Ham remain in the relegation zone and are now a point behind Tottenham Hotspur FC having played a game more.

That context has intensified the fallout around the decision.

However, it remains unlikely the result itself will be changed regardless of any complaint lodged with PGMOL.

Instead, the focus will likely shift towards accountability, explanation and future officiating standards.

What’s next?

West Ham are expected to formally submit their concerns to PGMOL in the coming days while continuing preparations for the final stretch of their survival battle.

For Arsenal, attention now turns to their potentially title-deciding clash with Burnley FC next week.

But the VAR debate surrounding this match is unlikely to disappear quickly.

Was the VAR intervention correct — or did West Ham deserve their late equaliser?
