Roberto De Zerbi is considering tactical adjustments to Tottenham Hotspur’s midfield ahead of Monday night’s crucial Premier League meeting with Leeds United.

Spurs head into the game fighting to avoid relegation, with De Zerbi under growing pressure to build on the recent improvement shown in the victory over Aston Villa.

That result offered one of Tottenham’s most balanced midfield performances of the season, as Conor Gallagher, Rodrigo Bentancur and João Palhinha combined effectively to secure a vital three points.

But De Zerbi knows the demands against Leeds will be very different.

Spurs midfield finally showed balance

For much of the campaign, Tottenham’s midfield has lacked structure, consistency and control.

De Zerbi has already used a wide range of combinations since arriving, but the trio against Villa finally provided a clear balance between defensive stability and attacking support.

Gallagher led the press aggressively and capped his performance with an important goal, while Palhinha’s positional discipline allowed Pedro Porro greater freedom to progress possession.

Bentancur, meanwhile, offered calmness during difficult phases after half-time.

Having followed Tottenham’s recent struggles closely, this was perhaps the clearest sign yet of De Zerbi’s tactical influence beginning to emerge.

Leeds present a very different challenge

The Tottenham manager has already hinted changes are coming for Monday’s game.

At home, Spurs are expected to dominate possession far more than they did against Villa, which could alter the midfield structure significantly.

Gallagher’s strengths are most visible when attacking space aggressively rather than creating against deep defensive blocks, while Palhinha’s profile is naturally more suited to protecting leads and defending transitions.

That could reopen the door for Yves Bissouma, whose dynamism and ball-carrying ability may better suit the demands of facing Leeds at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

There are also decisions to make regarding younger midfielders Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray.
However, De Zerbi admitted experience remains critical during a relegation battle.

“Bissouma, Bentancur, Joao Palhinha, they have much experience. They already know about playing in this situation.”

De Zerbi confirms tactical tweaks

The Spurs boss has no intention of completely overhauling his system but admitted adjustments are planned.

“We will change something in the occupation of the spaces, for sure. But I wouldn’t like to give too many ideas, too many instructions.”

That approach reflects De Zerbi’s wider philosophy.

He wants clarity and structure without overloading players mentally during one of the most pressured periods of the season.

Leeds, meanwhile, arrive in strong form after taking 12 points from their last six matches under Daniel Farke.

Their physicality and directness will pose a very different tactical test compared to Villa.

Pressure rising at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Tottenham’s home form remains a major concern.

Despite the quality of the stadium environment, results in north London have often intensified frustration among supporters over the last two seasons.

De Zerbi, though, is attempting to turn that atmosphere into a positive.

“Tottenham’s stadium is hot. For us, we are lucky to play in this stadium.”

However, the manager will also know how quickly momentum can shift if Spurs fail to start well against Leeds.

Another poor result would immediately increase pressure heading into the final stretch of the campaign.

What’s next?

Tottenham now face what could become one of the defining matches of their season against Leeds on Monday night.

Victory would strengthen belief that De Zerbi’s tactical adjustments are beginning to work. Defeat, however, would drag Spurs deeper into danger and intensify scrutiny around the team’s direction.

Much may depend on whether Tottenham’s midfield can deliver another disciplined performance under pressure.

Can Roberto De Zerbi finally stabilise Tottenham’s season before it is too late?
