Virgil van Dijk has held talks with new Netherlands head coach Xavi Hernandez as the Liverpool captain considers his international future.
The 35-year-old has won 96 caps for his country but is assessing whether to continue towards Euro 2028 following major changes within the Dutch national team.
Ronald Koeman left his position after the Netherlands were eliminated in the round of 32 at the World Cup, with former Barcelona boss Xavi appointed as his successor.
Van Dijk and Xavi discuss Netherlands future
Van Dijk wants clarity over the role Xavi sees him playing during the next international cycle.
The pair spoke around Liverpool’s Champions League meeting with Atletico Madrid, with further discussions surrounding the defender’s future expected.
Van Dijk has made it clear that he still believes he can play an important role for his country.
“I feel that I can still be valuable and important to the team,” he said.
“If we see eye to eye on that, we have two good years ahead of us leading up to Euro 2028. And if not, then we'll see.”
The Netherlands have four fixtures scheduled during the upcoming international break, including a Nations League opener against Germany.
Liverpool contract uncertainty remains
Van Dijk also faces an important decision at club level.
The Liverpool captain has entered the final year of his contract at Anfield, but the club are reportedly planning to delay discussions over a possible extension until next year.
That leaves uncertainty surrounding both his international and club future at an important stage of his career.
On the pitch, Liverpool have also endured a difficult opening to the season under Andoni Iraola.
Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Fulham means the Reds have drawn three of their opening four Premier League matches.
Iraola admitted Liverpool lacked freshness following their midweek Champions League victory over Atletico, but insisted his players must learn to cope with demanding schedules.
