Manchester City beat Manchester United with 10 men as Erling Haaland settles derby

Manchester is blue after Manchester City claimed a dramatic 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford despite playing most of the game with 10 men.

Phil Foden was shown a straight red card midway through the first half, but Enzo Maresca’s side survived heavy pressure before Erling Haaland scored the only goal of the match.

The result gives City a major derby win and marks their first Premier League victory at Old Trafford since October 2023.

The game changed shortly after the 20-minute mark when Foden was dismissed following an incident with Bruno Fernandes.

Referee Michael Oliver judged that the City attacker had kicked out and immediately produced a red card.

That left City facing the majority of the derby with 10 men, but they remained disciplined and continued looking for opportunities on the counter.

United came closest before half-time when Marcus Rashford struck the post from a free-kick.

United increased the pressure after the break and again hit the woodwork, but City survived.

Maresca introduced Iliman Ndiaye for Rayan Cherki at half-time before his side eventually found the breakthrough.

Joško Gvardiol advanced forward and supplied Haaland, who finished from close range to put City ahead.

The goal survived a lengthy VAR check and proved decisive.

United pushed forward desperately in search of an equaliser, but City defended their advantage while still creating opportunities of their own.

Senne Lammens made an important intervention to prevent City adding another, turning an effort onto the post as the visitors threatened on the break.

Haaland also had opportunities to score a second but could not put the contest beyond United.

It ultimately did not matter.

City held firm to complete an impressive victory with 10 men and strengthen their excellent start under Maresca.

Manchester City now turn their attention to Thursday’s EFL Cup clash with Norwich City. Manchester United face Brighton & Hove Albion in the League Cup on Wednesday as they look to respond quickly to derby defeat.
