Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has explained how a half-time tactical adjustment helped his side secure a 2-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues improved after a difficult opening period, with goals from Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer extending Michael Carrick's winless run to nine matches across all competitions.
The victory also provided a response to Chelsea's recent defeats against Tottenham and Liverpool.
Alonso reveals Chelsea's half-time adjustment
Chelsea struggled to control possession during the first half as United created several promising opportunities.
Alonso admitted his side needed to improve on the ball and revealed the message he delivered during the interval.
"We have spoken at half-time that we're going to win this game with the ball," the Spaniard explained.
The Chelsea manager also made tactical changes to help his players retain possession and limit United's attacking opportunities.
"We were more comfortable on the pitch, we looked better controlled," he added.
The response was immediate. Rogers broke the deadlock five minutes after the restart, driving through United's defence before lifting the ball over Senne Lammens.
Palmer doubles lead after Martínez dismissal
United had threatened throughout the first half, with Matheus Cunha seeing a goal ruled out for offside.
However, their hopes of recovering suffered a major setback after Rogers' opener.
Lisandro Martínez received two yellow cards in quick succession, the second following an incident involving Wesley Fofana inside the penalty area.
After a VAR review, Chelsea were awarded a penalty and Martínez was dismissed.
Palmer converted from the spot to double Chelsea's advantage.
Estêvão Willian also impressed, although two of his efforts were ruled out for offside. Lammens made several saves to prevent a heavier defeat.
Chelsea move into Premier League top four
The victory lifted Chelsea to fourth ahead of Sunday's meeting between Liverpool and Arsenal.
It also marked a welcome response following their defeat against Tottenham and Carabao Cup elimination at Liverpool.
Goalkeeper Mike Penders preserved Chelsea's clean sheet with a late save from Bryan Mbeumo.
