Aston Villa lead João Palhinha race as Bayern talks advance

Aston Villa have emerged as the frontrunners to sign Bayern Munich midfielder João Palhinha, with reports in Portugal and Germany suggesting Unai Emery's side are leading the race for the Portugal international.

Villa have already opened negotiations with Bayern over a season-long loan deal, and there is growing confidence that their financial package and Champions League football will prove decisive.

According to A Bola, Benfica are struggling to compete with Aston Villa's proposal, while Sky Germany reports the Premier League club are increasingly optimistic of completing the transfer.

Villa's interest in Palhinha has intensified following Amadou Onana's season-ending injury, with sporting director Damia Vidagany confirming talks are underway.

The Midlands club are offering a loan package that Benfica are reportedly unable to match, both in terms of the loan fee and the midfielder's wages.

Speaking recently, Vidagany said: "We need a midfielder because Amadou Onana is out for the entire season, and João Palhinha is a very good player who would fit our plans."

The Aston Villa director also stressed the club's strong relationship with Bayern Munich while refusing to discuss the finer details of the negotiations.

Palhinha is no longer considered part of Vincent Kompany's plans at Bayern, with his representatives exploring possible destinations.
