Leeds United face Igor Paixão battle as Marseille boss admits uncertainty over winger’s future

Leeds United remain firmly in the race to sign Marseille winger Igor Paixão, with uncertainty continuing to surround the Brazilian's future despite the Ligue 1 club's desire to keep him.

Daniel Farke's side have revived their long-standing interest in the 26-year-old after missing out on his signature last summer, but face competition from clubs in the Middle East.

Leeds made a serious attempt to sign Paixão last summer before the winger opted to join Marseille instead.

The Whites have now returned for the Brazilian, with recent reports claiming talks have taken place over a possible move to Elland Road.

Marseille are believed to want at least €35 million for the attacker after investing around €30m to sign him, while Transfermarkt currently values him at the same figure.

According to L'Equipe, uncertainty remains over whether Paixão will still be at Marseille when the transfer window closes.

The report claims several teammates have asked the winger if he intends to leave, but he has yet to provide a clear answer.

Leeds are the only Premier League club specifically named in the report, although unnamed clubs from the Middle East are also interested.

Marseille manager Bruno Génésio has made no secret of his admiration for Paixão, describing him as one of the club's key players.

However, the French coach admitted he is not fully informed about developments behind the scenes.

"Igor is an extraordinary lad, a very good player. He really enjoys training and playing. He was an important player last season and has continued that form. For us, he is a very important player. I want to keep all the good players; no coach wants to lose his best players. Besides, I'm not aware of everything in this transfer window."

Paixão enjoyed an impressive first season in France, registering 12 goals and seven assists in 42 appearances across all competitions.

Despite Marseille's desire to retain the Brazilian, the club's financial situation could force player sales before the transfer deadline.

That may provide Leeds with an opportunity to finally land a player they have tracked for more than a year if they are willing to meet Marseille's valuation.
