Aston Villa manager Unai Emery insists winning the Champions League remains one of his ambitions at Villa Park following Jamie Carragher's controversial suggestion that he should consider joining Manchester United.
The former Liverpool defender argued that United's stature would make Old Trafford an attractive destination for Emery, prompting an angry response from Villa supporters and the club's hierarchy.
However, the Spaniard believes Villa can challenge Europe's biggest clubs after winning last season's Europa League.
Emery refuses to rule out Champions League glory
Speaking ahead of Sunday's Premier League trip to Manchester United, Emery pointed to Villa's 1982 European Cup triumph and Leicester City's remarkable 2016 Premier League title.
"In football, everything can happen," Emery said.
He also referenced Villarreal reaching the Champions League semi-finals and Borussia Dortmund appearing in the final as examples of clubs exceeding expectations.
"Of course, it is very difficult to win the Premier League, very difficult to win the Champions League," he admitted.
"I have my dreams, thinking in objectives like that."
Emery has guided Villa into European competition in four consecutive seasons, including two Champions League campaigns.
Their Europa League triumph in 2026 ended the club's 30-year wait for a major trophy.
Carragher controversy followed by apology
Carragher suggested Emery should consider replacing Michael Carrick at Manchester United, arguing that Villa could not match United's historical standing.
His subsequent comments towards Villa supporters prompted chairman Nassef Sawiris to threaten legal action.
Carragher apologised for his language, and Villa withdrew the legal threat on 2 November.
The pundit has since maintained his broader argument about United's stature while acknowledging Villa's progress under Emery.
Aston Villa contract situation
Emery's current contract runs until 2029, with reports suggesting a further extension could be discussed.
No new agreement has been officially announced.
His latest comments nevertheless underline his determination to pursue major honours at Villa rather than accept that Champions League success is reserved for Europe's traditional powers.
