Roberto De Zerbi learns key Tottenham lessons after unbeaten tour

Tottenham Hotspur concluded their pre-season tour of Australia and New Zealand with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Chelsea, giving Roberto De Zerbi plenty to reflect on ahead of the new campaign.

Richarlison's stoppage-time winner secured victory in Sydney as Spurs completed an unbeaten tour, having also beaten Auckland FC, drawn with Sydney FC and defeated MK Dons before travelling Down Under.

With the Premier League season now fast approaching, De Zerbi has gained a clearer picture of where his squad stands.

One of the biggest positives from the tour was the form of goalkeeper Antonín Kinský.

Following Guglielmo Vicario's expected departure, Tottenham handed the Czech international a new long-term contract and the opportunity to establish himself as the club's first-choice goalkeeper.

Kinský justified that faith with an outstanding performance against Chelsea, making a string of crucial saves after Kevin Danso's early red card left Spurs under sustained pressure.

His display included an excellent stop to push Estêvão's effort onto the crossbar before Richarlison's late winner sealed the comeback victory.

While Tottenham finished the tour unbeaten, De Zerbi will know there is still significant work to do defensively.

A number of key defenders were unavailable or short of match fitness throughout the trip.

New signing Jan Paul van Hecke featured for only 46 minutes, Destiny Udogie did not play because of fitness issues, Micky van de Ven was unavailable and Andy Robertson only made his first appearance of pre-season against Chelsea.

Without Djed Spence and Pedro Porro, De Zerbi was also forced to rotate several options at right-back.

With the Premier League opener approaching, building defensive cohesion remains one of the manager's biggest priorities.

Tottenham continue to search for another attacking signing, but Mathys Tel's performances during pre-season have strengthened his case for a bigger role.

The French forward impressed throughout the tour, scoring a superb free-kick against Sydney FC and making a significant impact from the bench against Auckland FC.

De Zerbi has long admired Tel, having previously attempted to sign him during his time at Marseille, and the 21-year-old's performances suggest he could become an increasingly important part of Spurs' attack this season.

Tottenham will host Getafe before further friendlies against Hoffenheim as De Zerbi finalises his squad ahead of the Premier League opener. The club are also expected to remain active in the transfer market, particularly in attacking areas.
