Tottenham’s pursuit of Leon Goretzka has been put firmly on hold, with Bayern Munich confirming the midfielder will not leave before the end of the season, forcing any successful move to be delayed until the summer.
The update comes after intense speculation linking the Germany international with a January exit, including interest from Tottenham, Atlético Madrid and other European heavyweights.
Bayern confirm Goretzka will stay until summer
Goretzka revealed earlier on Friday that he will leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season when his contract expires, bringing an eight-year spell at the Allianz Arena to a close.
However, Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund has now made it clear there will be no early release.
“Leon has decided to stay with FC Bayern Munich,” Freund said.
“We can now also say: Leon Goretzka’s time at FC Bayern will be over in the summer. He will be taking a different path.
“But it’s not over. He will fight with the team in the coming months so that we can achieve great things.”
The message effectively closes the door on any January transfer — regardless of outside interest.
Tottenham interest acknowledged but paused
Tottenham have been monitoring Goretzka’s situation closely and entered the race for his signature late last month, according to reports in Germany. The 30-year-old’s experience, physical presence and Champions League pedigree make him an attractive profile for Tottenham Hotspur, particularly with midfield reinforcements under consideration.
BILD previously claimed that Atlético Madrid were advanced in talks, but Goretzka’s decision to remain in Munich until the summer has frozen all negotiations.
Any club interested — Tottenham included — will now have to wait and reopen discussions once the season concludes.
Why Bayern want him to finish the season
Despite confirming his departure, Bayern are keen to keep Goretzka fully engaged during the run-in. Freund praised both his professionalism and influence within the squad.
“Extremely successful, extremely strong in the way he has presented himself here as a person and as a player,” Freund said. “We’ve had very good discussions and want to communicate openly.”
With Bayern still fighting on multiple fronts, allowing Goretzka to leave mid-season was never viewed as realistic from an internal perspective.
Summer free transfer battle taking shape
From Tottenham’s point of view, the delay may not be entirely negative. Goretzka will be available on a free transfer in the summer, intensifying competition but also removing any transfer fee from negotiations.
Having followed Tottenham’s recruitment strategy closely, free-agent opportunities of this calibre are increasingly appealing — provided wage demands and squad balance align.
However, it remains too early to draw firm conclusions. Atlético Madrid remain strong contenders, and other Champions League clubs are expected to enter the frame once the window shifts to summer business.

Would Leon Goretzka be the right summer signing for Tottenham — or should Spurs look for a younger midfield profile?
