Sunderland refuse to give up on Geny Catamo as January transfer plan emerges

Sunderland are continuing to track Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo after failing to secure his signature during the summer transfer window.

The Black Cats made a serious attempt to land the Mozambique international but were unable to meet Sporting’s demands. Their interest has not disappeared, however, with Sunderland now positioning themselves for another potential move in January.

Sunderland sent a representative to Sporting’s recent 3-1 Champions League victory over Galatasaray, with Catamo reportedly the specific focus of the scouting mission.

The winger strengthened his case with an impressive performance, scoring a spectacular goal that sparked Sporting’s comeback.

Catamo’s current form has only increased Sunderland’s interest, and the Premier League club continue to monitor him closely ahead of the January transfer window.

Their presence in Portugal suggests this is more than lingering interest following the failed summer negotiations.

Sunderland pushed hard for Catamo during the summer but could not convince Sporting to sell.

The Portuguese club demanded a guaranteed €40million for the 25-year-old, while Sunderland were prepared to offer €35m plus another €5m in bonuses.

That difference ultimately prevented an agreement.

Sporting’s stance could again present a significant obstacle in January, particularly if Catamo continues producing impressive performances in the Champions League and domestic competition.

Sunderland are not the only club interested in the winger.

Como made preliminary enquiries during the summer, while Tottenham and clubs from Saudi Arabia have also been credited with interest.

However, Sunderland appear to be among the most proactive clubs currently pursuing Catamo. Their continued scouting could put them in a strong position should Sporting become willing to negotiate.

Sunderland are expected to continue monitoring Catamo before deciding whether to make another offer in January. His excellent form could strengthen their determination to return, but it may also make Sporting even less willing to reduce their valuation.
