João Gomes has described his Champions League debut as a “dream come true” after helping Aston Villa secure an impressive 3-2 victory over Club Brugge.
The Brazilian midfielder started Tuesday’s game in Belgium and marked his first-ever appearance in the competition by assisting Emiliano Buendía for Villa’s second goal.
Having only joined from Wolves two months ago, Gomes already appears increasingly comfortable in his new surroundings.

Speaking to Globo Esporte after the victory, Gomes explained what making his Champions League debut meant to him.
“A dream come true,” Gomes said. “Being able to play a Champions League game for the first time in my career is one of those moments you’ll never forget.”
The 25-year-old was particularly pleased to combine the personal milestone with an important away victory.
“I’m glad it came with a win and that I was able to play well,” he added.
Gomes grew up watching the Champions League and described it as the competition where his generation witnessed many of the biggest stars in Brazilian and world football.
Aston Villa targeting knockout stage
Gomes believes Villa showed their character against Club Brugge, overcoming a difficult atmosphere to collect three points.
“Our objective is clear: to reach the knockout stage,” he said. “There’s nothing better than starting with three points away from home.”
Villa now have two consecutive Champions League fixtures at Villa Park, and Gomes has set an ambitious target of winning both.
The midfielder also praised his teammates for handling the pressure in Belgium and maintaining their performance throughout the match.
Wolves experience helping Gomes settle quickly
Gomes only moved from Wolves to Aston Villa during the summer, but his previous Premier League experience has helped make the transition easier.
He believes he is becoming increasingly comfortable with both his teammates and the tactical demands placed on him by the manager.
His familiarity with the intensity of English football has also allowed him to make an immediate contribution rather than requiring a lengthy adaptation period.
After scoring against Bayern Munich during pre-season, Gomes has now added a Champions League assist to his encouraging start at Villa.
