Andoni Iraola praises Liverpool ‘spirit and fight’ ahead of Fulham clash

Andoni Iraola has praised the character Liverpool have shown during the opening weeks of the season, insisting that “spirit and fight” must become trademarks of his team.

Liverpool produced another comeback in midweek, recovering from behind to beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 in their Champions League opener through goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister.

With Fulham visiting Anfield this afternoon, Iraola now wants his players to demonstrate those qualities again despite a demanding turnaround.

Liverpool have already found themselves needing to respond to difficult situations several times this season.

They previously fought back against Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest before doing so again against Atletico on Wednesday.

“Of course I would prefer us not to go behind in games but when it does happen, we have to be able to react,” Iraola said.

“This is a big compliment to the players and we need to build on the spirit that they have shown.”

The Liverpool manager believes those experiences are particularly valuable because his squad is still developing together.

“We are still at the stage of our development as a team where we have to create our own shared experiences,” he explained.

Liverpool have had less than three days to recover from their Champions League victory, meaning Iraola and his staff have focused heavily on balancing recovery with preparation.

The Spaniard nevertheless hopes such demanding schedules become a regular feature, as that would indicate Liverpool remain competitive across several competitions.

Fulham arrive at Anfield still searching for their first Premier League victory after three narrow defeats.

Iraola warned that their results do not accurately reflect their performances and believes that makes them a dangerous opponent.

Iraola also highlighted the role Liverpool supporters played against Atletico.

He was particularly impressed by how the Anfield crowd responded when the team encountered difficult periods rather than only reacting to goals.

The manager believes creating that connection between the players and supporters will be important as Liverpool continue developing under his leadership.

“As a team, we are showing character and we are showing fight,” Iraola said. “This, for me, has to be our aim in every single game that we play.”

Liverpool now turn their full attention to Fulham as they look to build on last weekend’s Premier League victory over Ipswich. Iraola will also need to manage his squad carefully following the physical demands of Wednesday’s Champions League comeback.
