Scott McTominay is taking his time over his future amid reported interest from Aston Villa, with Napoli preparing a new proposal to keep the Scotland international.

The midfielder has yet to agree a contract extension with the Italian club, despite his current deal running until 2028.

According to Italian journalist Giovanni Scotto, Napoli are considering an unusual arrangement that could allow McTominay to leave in the future while securing his immediate commitment.

McTominay undecided amid Premier League interest

Speaking on YouTube, in comments relayed by AreaNapoli, Scotto confirmed that the 29-year-old is not rushing into a decision.

“He hasn’t renewed with Napoli and wants to think things through. Manchester United and Aston Villa have shown some interest, but McTominay intends to wait,” he explained.

Previous reports suggested McTominay was seeking an annual salary of €8m (£6.9m), a figure Napoli have been reluctant to meet.

However, the club are now exploring another way to persuade him to stay.

“Napoli don’t want to lose McTominay and will offer him a contract renewal with the possibility of leaving through a gentlemen’s agreement, a sort of handshake,” Scotto said.

Such an understanding could allow the midfielder to pursue a transfer in two or three years if a significant offer arrives.

Napoli set €25m–€30m valuation for summer exit

Although Napoli want McTominay to remain, Scotto believes an earlier departure could still be negotiated.

“If the player wants to leave as early as June, his valuation for next summer is €25-30m (£21.7-26m), no less.”

That would provide Manchester United and Aston Villa with an indication of the potential cost of a summer 2027 move.

Napoli also face uncertainty over their midfield, with Scotto suggesting Kevin De Bruyne, Stanislav Lobotka and André-Frank Zambo Anguissa could all depart.

Their possible exits would increase the importance of retaining McTominay.

McTominay cleared to return for Napoli

The Scotland international has also received medical clearance following a cardiac ablation procedure on 8 September to treat a minor benign arrhythmia.

After passing medical examinations on 7 October, McTominay is available for selection under Massimiliano Allegri again.

His immediate focus can now return to football while discussions over his longer-term future continue.
