Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has described the club as a "circus" following Lisandro Martinez's public criticism of its leadership and transfer strategy.

Martinez questioned United's ambition and summer recruitment after Tuesday's 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid, prompting criticism from Keane and fellow former captain Gary Neville.

Both pundits acknowledged concerns about the club's direction but questioned whether Martinez was justified in publicly challenging the hierarchy.

Keane criticises chaos at Manchester United

Speaking on The Overlap's Stick to Football podcast, Keane suggested Martinez's comments reflected wider problems at Old Trafford.

"They're obviously not together," Keane said.

"It is chaotic there from the top to the bottom. We go there on match days and I don't like the feeling around the club."

The former midfielder also questioned the circumstances surrounding Michael Carrick's appointment as manager.

"It's chaos, it's like a circus," he added.

Keane was equally critical of Martinez's performances, arguing that the defender had not established himself as a senior figure capable of publicly challenging the club.

"I don't see him as a senior player at Man United; I see him as a centre half who's making lots of mistakes."

Neville warns Martinez has criticised his team-mates

Neville believes Martinez's comments about United needing more signings could damage relationships within the dressing room.

"When Martinez says they should have brought more players in, he's directly attacking his team-mates," Neville explained.

He suggested senior players including Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire would be unhappy with the implication that the existing squad was not good enough.

Neville also questioned why Martinez singled out Jason Wilcox, arguing that United's transfer budget is ultimately determined by the club's owners.

Martinez subsequently issued an Instagram statement explaining that his initial remarks came from frustration and a desire to see United competing for major honours.
